Result of leaking Acetylene bottle

Postby Cableguy » Mon Feb 08, 2010 7:59 pm

So that's why we vent it to the exterior. Good to share with the techs to help them realize the power in one of those little tanks.
Accidently ignited by activating a remote door lock device.

That's some scary stuff.

My family is lucky to be alive. A long time ago when my daughter was about 6yrs old she and I were waiting for her mother in the minivan. I used to keep the middle seat out, so she got bored and started romping around the inside while we were parked. At some point she knocked over my little propane torch and must have stepped on the knob. I kept asking her if she passed gas. She kept denying it.

It probably leaked for about a good 45min in the van while we sat in it, and drove off to our next destination. The scary part was my wife smokes, and had lit up at least once while in the vehicle.
It wasn't until we got to our next stop that it finally hit me that it wasn't our daughter farting but the propane bottle. I guess the open windows were enough to keep it vented and keep us alive.

I still think the kid farted, but doesn't matter now. lol

Well there is a close one. Thats nice blame the kids LOL (Sticky rug rats)

I think your windows down did help alot but your other factor is that propane is heavier and usually hangs low on the floor. So she got away with it being high and up front.
Close call though, betcha don't do that anymore??

I like the neighbors for sale sign in the first pic. Yeah good luck with that buddy.

I keep my small traveling welding rig in my tool box in the bed of the truck, I cut holes in the bottom of the box to vent it if it ever leaks.
My big welding rig I use in the garage is in a HAZMAT locker outside the garage I've seen pictures like this before and dont want it where I could have an accident.

about 15 years ago I saw the aftermath of a full 3500PSI Nitrogen bottle getting loose in a fire station, it left close to the same carnage except there was no fire. It actually blew through a cinderblock cement and rebar filled wall and hit a hook & ladder fire truck hard enough to knock the rear axle and tires all the way out from under the fire truck. THe power inside pressurized containers can be scarey even if they arent flammable.

The only bottle I would keep now is argon for my tig. That acetylene is just too scary for my liking. Freaks me out whenever the flame pops out. I always worry the arrestor will fail. I hate gas welding.

I use the MIG more than anything, but it's a hassle lugging the generator around.
I had a nice mobile mig on my rock crawler but we burned the control box out last summer welding some new tierods for a truck stuck on the trail. So now when I need a welder I gotta carry around the gas rig.

If you're just looking to get someone moving again, I don't see why you couldn't just go the jethro route.
Keep a couple car batteries on hand, a set of heavy gauge jumpers and a pack of rods. One battery is good for light welding, and 2 in series will easily let you stick 2 pieces of 1/4" steel together without issue.
Just make sure you keep the batteries vented while in use.
Throw a third battery in series with a heavy rod, and you have a redneck plasma cutter. I'm certain you could blow through 3/8" steel. 36 DC volts at about 1500amps *sounds of tim taylor grunting in the background*

I've used that method before, I used to carry 2 extra charged batterys in the bed for that purpose. I just got spoiled with the on board welder.
