Wood floors

Postby tbplus10 » Sun Jan 10, 2010 6:23 pm

Anyone got tips on installing wood floors they'd like to share?

This months project is installing wood floors in the upstairs hallway, office, and down the stairs.
Never did wood floors before, layed plenty of tile floors so I'm hoping they are similiar.

Next months project will be laying tile floors in the gameroom. Probably shoulda layed those before I got the pool table and video games, oh well too late now.

Couple of things I learned be it hardwood or ceramic. It all starts with a good solid base. Meaning, once your at the bare floor snap chaulk lines at stud locations and go screw nuts. Like every 4-6" nuts. Believe me if you get every bit of squeak and floor noise out your floor thats more than half the battle. Hardwood I still just use wax paper base and rent a pneumatic nailer (Time saver) Ceramic I like using cement board as a base and a product called Ditra http://www.schluter.com/6_1_ditra.aspx

Nothing worse than squeaky hardwood or cracking tile because you didn't take the time to do the base right...not from experience or anything...

Usually tile floors I use 3/4 marine plywood, but I dont want to raise the floor to much with this hardwood so I'll have to take a good look at whats under the carpet when I lift it.
I bought a new nail gun on sale at Loews last month, battery powered but it really slams the nails home. I was putting 16 penneys into the fence no problem last week and the battery lasts a long time.
